Welcome Message

Since the days of Bartolomeu Dias and Vasco da Gama, Portugal has enjoyed a reputation as one of the world`s greatest sea-faring nations. Moreover, its fascination with our planet`s most precious resource - water, can be clearly demonstrated by the increasing number of national and international institutions in Portugal dedicated to oceanographic and hydrological activities. In this connection, EUMETSAT and CNES are pleased to announce a jointly organised conference on Altimetry for Oceans and Hydrology, to take place in Lisbon, from 18 - 22 October 2010. The venue will be the Feira Internacional de Lisboa (Lisbon International Fair), located on the banks of the river Tagus, itself the site of much of Portugal`s history.

A challenging and diverse programme organised around plenary talks, splinter sessions and posters awaits experts from the oceanographic and hydrological communities during a week which aims to take stock of recent achievements and to look at the current challenges as well as future needs. Altimetry for Oceans and Hydrology will embrace three individual events, beginning with the 2010 Ocean Surface Topography Science Team (OST-ST) meeting from 18 – 20 October, and followed by a special meeting entitled Towards High-Resolution of Ocean Dynamics and Terrestrial Surface Waters from Space, and the International Doris Service Workshop (IDS), both running from 21 – 22 October.

We look forward to welcoming you to Lisbon this October.
